Smile Therapy - How do you get a healthy mind? You need to let go of tension and anxiety. To do that, don’t try to relax your mind; relax your muscles and your mind will follow.
Your face is the tensest part of your body. You use it to both express and hide emotions, so over time it builds layers of tension.* Almost as much of your brain is used to control the over 60 muscles of your face as it is for the rest of your body. Therefore, to relax your body, first relax your face, and then other muscles naturally relax.
How? Hold a gentle smile – more Buddha or Mona Lisa-like than a grin – for at least 10 minutes. This not only relaxes your body, it prevents facial wrinkles.
Smile Therapy Assignment — Throughout the day, make a conscious effort to softly smile:
- When showering
- While working on a computer
- When driving
- As you watch TV
- As you lay in bed before going to sleep
